This image shows the difference in page size between two differently bound copies of the same edition, one page being superimposed upon the other. Bookbinders usually trimmed the edges of the books they bound, removing the deckle edges of the original sheets of paper to create a smooth edge around the book’s text block. How much they trimmed off varied, sometimes far too much for the best proportions for the final work. The volumes of Addison I have been photographing are, unfortunately, over-trimmed.
